By the time I’m making my way to the mess hall, dark has already fallen. It’s eerie, how that happens. The closer winter comes, the more the sun hides, the faster it flees. I shiver, drawing my cloak tight, and step up into the stone hall.

Daphne’s Trials keep ringing through my head.

“First was the Bloodhearth Trial. I faced someone who didn’t want their power...they begged me to take it. To spare them the agony of carrying that magic like a curse through life…”

And I’d asked, foolishly, of course: “Well? Did you do it? Did you take their power?”

Daphne had only laughed. “Oh, it was one I wanted. But no. I helped them subdue; I set it like a cancer in their bones so they would not feel its weight. And I passed.”

Eyeguard. As I walk briskly toward the mess hall, I flip through the book she gave me. A Brief Historia of the Magic Academy for Troubled Monsters; Its Greatest Contributors, Founders, and Alumni. Inside is a quick breakdown of the three Founders, and what their Trials have consisted of traditionally. Eyeguard, House of Spirituality, tends to mess with you mentally and emotionally. Predictably, Stonespine brings more of the physical trials. My own house, Bloodhearth, tends to deal in desire and drama.

So. That’s what I’ll be looking forward to next week.

I sigh and snap the book shut. My one saving grace is that I don’t have to attend classes while I’m in training. I’ll spend every day with Daphne, doing pretty much what we did today. Scouring texts, discussing possibilities, brainstorming strategies.

The thought is nice, but it’s not really a comfort. I’m still just a walking ball of anxiety, which only pushes me that much closer to the edges of my power. First things first—I need to talk to Magis about brewing me some more of that potion. If I have any hope at all of passing these Trials, that’s the only way I’m going to do it.

Not to mention, it’s the only way I can keep myself from accidentally killing the students.

As I step into the mess hall, my mind flinches to Zane. He was so...sweet, today. He was vulnerable. Kind. He was almost affectionate. And the way he touched me, the way he held my hand in his...there was no fear. Not in him, not in me, not between us. Just comfort. A sort of safety. A place I wish I always was.

And the mess hall is most definitely not that.

The minute I’m inside, I am absolutely swamped with people. Students clamor to take selfies with me or make lunch plans, and I almost laugh at how ludicrous it all really is. I mean, I didn’t do anything. Not yet. Maybe they all just want photos with the soon-to-be-dead girl. At least that would make some sense.

“O-K, that’s enough, guys. Come on!” Magis has her arm looped through mine, and she’s all but dragging me from the mob I’ve been swamped by. I stumble after her, grateful when our little table rises out of the fray like an oasis.
